What fuel polishing means
Fuel polishing is a mechanical cleaning process: oil is drawn from the tank, passed through filtration to remove water, sludge (often called “diesel bug” when microbial contamination is present) and other debris, then returned to the tank clean. It is different from simply replacing the fuel, and it can be the sensible option where the oil itself, not the tank or boiler, needs attention.
We carry out fuel polishing in-house with our own equipment and engineers, so the same team that assesses the tank does the work.
Look at the tank and the system together
Fuel condition, tank condition and boiler performance are connected — contaminated fuel can be a symptom of a tank nearing the end of its life, or of water ingress through a damaged tank or breather. We ask what has happened and assess the situation before recommending fuel polishing on its own.
Signs your fuel may need attention
A boiler that has started cutting out intermittently, unusual smells from the tank area, or visible sediment when the tank is checked are all worth mentioning when you call.
A typical fuel polishing visit usually takes up to a day on site.
Clear advice for oil-heating owners
Tell us about the tank, the fuel and any problems you have noticed with the boiler or heating. We explain whether fuel polishing, tank work or another route makes the most sense — not the most billable one.
